Animals
Diane Ackerman
“Touch is a powerfully important sense among animals, for whom the slightest touch of an object or another animal triggers responses” (pg. 98).
Artist Statement:
The sense of touch is heightened through physical, mental, and emotional bonds. The connection that touch creates can become an unbreakable bond. This bond establishes the values of trust and compassion and is shown through how animals react to touch of another animal or object. The sense of touch and the bond it creates can break through barriers and allow an animal to feel safe and protected. The more an animal is touched and cared for the smaller the barrier gets.
I used my roommate, Amelia's kitten, Sophie to see how she reacts to being petted and held. In the video, when Sophie was being petted she would stretch and flex her paws to show her affection and love of being petted. Overall, proving that the sense of touch creates a trusting and compassionate bond between an animal and a human being.
