Artist Statement
Nature and civilization. Peace and violence.
My Fluxus box was inspired by the Disney movie Pocahontas; however, I brought a deeper more historical meaning to the piece. The items that fill my Fluxus box represents the two side of Pocahontas's true story. Four of the items represent her life as a Native American and their culture; including Native American necklace, war drum, chief stick, and a tree leave. The other four items represent Pocohantas and her journal to England; including English princess crown, compass, handcuffs, and cross. For the outside my Fluxus box, I decided to use fiberglass because of its overall presentation and texture. The presentation of the fiberglass makes it seems as if it is an actual living tree trunk; however, fiberglass is manmade. The texture of the fiberglass is solid, hard, thorny, and thick, which represents the challenges of Pocahontas's journey to England and the culture shock she faced. Overall, my Fluxus box represents how cultures can collide but then also intertwine to help create a better understanding of each other.
